AT TUESDAY'S MEETING THE UPSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO FUND $1.7 MILLION IN SPLOST DOLLARS TO RE-ROOF THE UPSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE--A GRIFFIN COMPANY SRS WAS AWARDED THE BID--THE ONLY COMPANY TO SUBMIT A BID. WHEN THE PROJECT WAS BID OUT LAST YEAR SRS WAS THE LONE BIDDER BUT THIS BID IS $300,000 LESS.
THE COMPANY COMES WITH A STRONG REPUTATION ACCORDING TO PRECISION PLANNING--THE COUNTY'S CONSULTANT ON THE PROJECT.
SRS JUST COMPLETED A MAJOR ROOFING PROJECT AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY--THE COMMISSIONERS WERE TOLD.
COMMISSIONER JAMES ELLINGTON SAID THE COUNTY HAS BEEN KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD FOR 15 YEARS ON THE COURTHOUSE ROOF AND ITS TIME TO GET IT DONE. THE ENTIRE PROJECT IS ESTIMATED TO TAKE A YEAR.
SUPERIOR COURT JUDGES HAVE BEEN TEXTING THE COUNTY FROM THE BENCH ABOUT ISSUES INCLUDING FALLING PLASTER AND CONTINUOUS LEAKS IN THE CEILING WHILE COURT IS IN SESSION AND LAST WEEK THERE WAS 4 INCHS OF WATER IN THE COURTHOUSE BASEMENT.
FIRST--A TARP WILL BE PLACED IN THE CEILING OF THE COURTHOUSE TO CATCH WATER AND DIVERT IT WHILE WORK BEGINS TO REPLACE THE TILES AND THE CLOCK TOWER. A COMPANY FROM LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY SPECIALIZES IN HISTORICAL RESTORATIONS AND WILL BUILD AN EXACT REPLICA OF THE CUPOLA--SOMETHING THEY DO ALL OVER THE WORLD--THE BOARD WAS TOLD BY THEIR REP.
