THE UPSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HELD A CALLED MEETING WEDNESDAY AND APPROVED A RESOLUTION DECLARING A STATE OF EMERGENCY--
BUT DECLINED TO IMPOSE A CURFEW BASED ON A RECOMMENDATION FROM LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
INSTEAD THEY PUT TEETH IN THE RESOLUTION BANNING GATHERINGS OF 10 PEOPLE OR MORE WITHOUT SOCIAL DISTANCING--
A VIOLATION PUNISHABLE BY A $1000 FINE OR UP TO 60 DAYS IN JAIL OR BOTH--SAME AS THE THOMASTON CITY COUNCIL.
SHERIFF DAN KILGORE AND THOMASTON POLICE CHIEF MIKE RICHARDSON MET WITH CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS WEDNESDAY AND STOPPED SHORT OF RECOMMENDING A CURFEW. AT A CALLED MEETING OF THE THOMASTON MAYOR AND COUNCIL WEDNESDAY--
CHIEF RICHARDSON SAID HE AND THE SHERIFF BELIEVE A CURFEW RESTRICTS EVERYONE--AND MOST CITIZENS ARE DOING WHAT THEY SHOULD.
HE CITED POP-UP PARTIES AS THE PROBLEM AND NOTED THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND HIS DEPARTMENT WILL BE ON DOUBLE SHIFTS THIS WEEKEND TO CITE SUCH GATHERINGS.
THOMASTON MAYOR J.D. STALLINGS TOLD COUNCIL WEDNESDAY --THE GOVERNOR'S SHELTER IN PLACE ORDER IS STRONGER THAN A CURFEW.
DURING THE COUNTY MEETING--
COMMISSIONER JAMES ELLINGTON EXPLAINED HE WAS A FENCE RIDER ON IMPOSING A CURFEW BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO RECOMMENDATION FROM HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS THAT IT WOULD HELP CURB THE SPREAD OF CORONA VIRUS.
CHIEF RICHARDSON NOTED--
A PERSON PUT THE WORD OUT THEY WOULD BE HOLDING A BIG PARTY THIS WEEKEND--BUT SHERIFF KILGORE HAD A HEART TO HEART TALK WITH THEM AND ITS OFF.
