ACCORDING TO THOMASTON POLICE CHIEF MIKE RICHARDSON A MIDDLE AGED MAN INVOLVED IN A STAND-OFF WITH OFFICERS MONDAY EVENING AT 201 SPRINGDALE DRIVE, 46 YEAR OLD JAMES REDD JR REMAINS IN ICU AT A COLUMBUS HOSPITAL AFTER HE SHOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD.
DURING THE STAND-OFF REDD, ARMED WITH A PISTOL, FIRED A COUPLE OF ROUNDS NEAR POLICE AND THEY RETURNED FIRE BUT REDD WAS NOT WOUNDED.
CHIEF RICHARDSON TOLD 101 NEWS REDD HAD A HISTORY OF DRUG USE AND ADMITTED TO OFFICERS WHEN THEY RESPONDED TO THE SCENE THAT HE HAD SMOKED SOME METH, RECENTLY. THE CHIEF SAID REDD HAD BEEN LIVING IN CALIFORNIA BUT A WHILE BACK HIS PARENTS CONVINCED HIM TO MOVE TO THOMASTON AND HE HAD A JOB AT A LOCAL COMPANY AND APPEARED TO BE DRUG FREE.
HOWEVER, HIS PARENTS TOLD POLICE HE HAD ACTED ODD LATELY--GIVING INDICATIONS HE WAS BACK ON DRUGS.
CHIEF RICHARDSON TOLD THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL AT TUESDAY'S MEETING HE WAS PROUD OF THE WAY HIS OFFICERS AND DEPUTIES FROM UPSON S.O. CONDUCTED THEMSELVES IN SUCH A TENSE SITUATION--AS REDD WAS OBVIOUSLY UNDER DURESS.
