RELOCATE THOMASTON'S CITY HALL DUE TO CONFEDERATE IMAGERY?

THE THOMASTON MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPARENTLY PLAN TO EXPLORE MOVING CITY HALL FROM THE CITY-COUNTY GOVERNMENT COMPLEX BECAUSE COUNCILMAN JEFF MIDDLEBROOKS SAYS ITS A "CONFEDERATE BUILDING."

AT TUESDAY'S MEETING, MIDDLEBROOKS SAID SOME WHO ATTEND MUNICIPAL COURT AND PROBATE COURT IN THE BUILDING ARE INTIMIDATED BY THE CONFEDERATE IMAGERY. SINCE THE BUILDING IS JOINTLY OWNED AND OPERATED BY BOTH CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS THAT AGREEMENT WOULD PROBABLY COME INTO PLAY IF CITY GOVERNMENT RELOCATES.

AT THE URGING OF COUNCIL MEMBER LAKETHIA REEVES THE GOVERNING BODY VOTED 3-2 TO GET A SECOND OPINION FROM THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ABOUT REMOVING THE CONFEDERATE IMAGERY FROM THE BUILDING . AT A CALLED MEETING LAST WEEK COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO TAKE NO FURTHER ACTION ON REMOVING IT , BASED ON AN OPINION BY CITY ATTORNEY DEANN WHEELER.

THAT OPINION WAS BASED ON THE STATE LAW THAT GOVERNS THE REMOVING OF MONUMENTS. COUNCIL MEMBERS DON GREATHOUSE AND RYAN TUCKER VOTED AGAINST OBTAINING A SECOND OPINION. GREATHOUSE SAID THE LAW IS PLAIN IN WHAT IT SAYS AND TUCKER SAID HE'S HAD COMPLAINTS FROM HIS CONSTITUENTS ABOUT CONTINUING TO SPEND MONEY ON THE ISSUE.
