THOMASTON CITY COUNCIL THUMBS UP ON REDSPEED CAMERAS

ON A 4-1 VOTE AT A CALLED MEETING FRIDAY, THE THOMASTON CITY COUNCIL APPROVED CONTINUANCE OF THE REDSPEED CAMERA CONTRACT ON THE SCHOOL ZONE AT UL MIDDLE SCHOOL. COUNCILMAN JEFF MIDDLEBROOKS HAS BEEN A CRITIC OF THE PROGRAM AND CAST THE LONE NO VOTE, CLAIMING ITS ENTRAPMENT.

THOMASTON POLICE CHIEF MIKE RICHARDSON TOLD THE COUNCIL, THE PROGRAM WAS STARTED AFTER PASTOR GREG SMITH, A SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD COMPLAINED ABOUT SPEEDERS AND THE TEST RUN CAPTURED THOUSANDS OF VIOLATORS. COUNCILMAN MIDDLEBROOKS HAS CHARGED THE PROCEEDS GO TO PURCHASE WHAT HE CALLED "TOYS" FOR THE P.D., MOST RECENTLY 25 NEW TASERS. CHIEF RICHARDSON AND MAJOR SIDNEY CORLEY EXPLAINED NEW GENERATION TASERS WERE NEEDED, PLUS THE TASER COMPANY IS RAMPING-UP ITS TRAINING COMMITTMENT.

CHIEF RICHARDSON TOLD 101 NEWS AFTER THE MEETING, HE WAS PLEASED TO HAVE COUNCIL'S BACKING.
