NOT
GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS THE VERDICT IN SPALDING COUNTY
SUPERIOR COURT WEDNESDAY IN THE MURDER TRIAL OF MARY
KATHERINE HIGDON, AGE 24 ON TRIAL FOR THE SHOOTING DEATH
OF HER BOYFRIEND, STEVEN FREEMAN IN AUGUST 2018.
THE
JURY WAS OUT FOR OVER 4 HOURS BEFORE DELIVERING THE
VERDICT OF ACQUITTAL.
DISTRICT
ATTORNEY BEN COKER TOLD 101 NEWS, HE WAS DISAPPOINTED
WITH THE NOT GUILTY VERDICT —BUT AS AN OFFICER OF THE
COURT HE RESPECTS THE DECISION OF THE JURY.
D.A.
COKER SAID HIS HEART GOES OUT TO THE FREEMAN FAMILY FOR
THEIR LOSS.
TESTIMONY
POINTED TO A STRAINED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO AT
TIMES. ON THE STAND MS. HIGDON CLAIMED FREEMAN HAD RAPED
HER TWICE BEFORE AND SHE THOUGHT HE WAS ABOUT TO ATTACK
HER AGAIN WHEN SHE SHOT HIM IN SELF DEFENSE.
PROSECUTORS
CONTENDED HIGDON SHOT FREEMAN IN A FIT OF RAGE BECAUSE HE
WAS LEAVING HER.
