SPALDING COUNTY COMMISSIONER DON HAWBAKER REMAINS IN THE SPALDING COUNTY JAIL UNDER SUCIDE WATCH AFTER HIS BOND WAS DENIED FOR A SWAT TEAM STANDOFF TUESDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HE ALLEGEDLY FIRED SHOTS AT DEPUTIES FROM HIS SUN CITY RESIDENCE. DEPUTIES WERE THERE TO SERVE AN ARREST WARRANT FOR POINTING A PISTOL AT HIS WIFE.
ACCORDING TO STATE LAW THERE ARE SEVERAL STEPS TO REMOVING A COUNTY COMMISSIONER FROM OFFICE BUT THE PROCESS STARTS WHEN AN INDICTMENT IS ISSUED BY THE GRAND JURY AND FOWARDED TO THE GOVERNOR. THE GOVERNOR APPOINTS A REVIEW COMMISSION OF THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND TWO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FROM AROUND THE STATE TO DETERMINE IF THAT COUNTY COMMISSIONER SHOULD BE SUSPENDED AND IF SO THE GOVERNOR MAKES A TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT.
DISTRICT ATTORNEY BEN COKER HAS RECUSED HIS OFFICE AND ANOTHER D.A. WILL PROSECUTE THE CASE.
