CITY OF THOMASTON MAYOR J.D. STALLINGS SAYS THE UPSON COUNTY BOARD OF TAX ASSESSORS HAVE DECLINED AN INVITATION TO HOLD A PUBLIC MEETING WITH ALL THREE TAX LEVEYING BODIES, CITY COUNCIL, COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND BOARD OF EDUCATION. INSTEAD THEY HAVE ISSUED AN INVITATION TO ATTEND THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING OF THE TAX ASSESSORS BOARD.
MAYOR STALLINGS SAID THE FORMAT OF THE PUBLIC MEETING WOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED CITIZENS. TO ASK QUESTIONS OF THE TAX ASSESSORS ONLY MEMBERS OF THE TAXING BODIES. SINCE PUBLIC HEARINGS ON TAX MILLAGE -- QUESTIONS HAVE SURFACED ABOUT RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL TAX ASSESSMENTS AND GOVERNMENT AND THE PUBLIC HAVE BEEN CALLING FOR ANSWERS.
AT TUESDAY'S 7PM MEETING THE THOMASTON CITY COUNCIL IS SCHEDULED TO DISCUSS THE TAX ASSESSORS WRITTEN RESPONSE TO THE CITY'S INVITATION TO A PUBLIC MEETING.
