The Pike County Commissioners set the 2010 tax levy at 12.864 mills at a called meeting Wednesday, a slight increase over last year.
During a public hearing prior to the meeting, three citizens spoke on the property tax increase.
Melvin Kyle suggested all departments cut 10% including the sheriff’s department along with insurance benefits for county employees. Kyle is also opposed to a sales tax for courthouse renovations.
Harold Callaway wanted clarification on fines and forfeiture distribution, the county only gets a small prorated share.
John Morrison asked about the total tax bill including school tax millage.
County Manager Bill Sawyer told him the school board is to be commended on their efforts to hold a rate increase to a minimum.
