THOMASTON COUNCIL TO DISCUSS HERITAGE ISSUES

THOMASTON CITY MANAGER RUSSELL THOMPSON SAYS THE NAME OF R.E. LEE ON THE GOVERNMENT COMPLEX WILL BE PART OF A DISCUSSION OF HERITAGE ISSUES AT THE FIRST COUNCIL MEETING IN AUGUST. 

THE MANAGER SAID HE WAS APPROACHED BY COUNCIL MEMBERS WHO WERE CONTACTED BY CONSTITUENTS WITH CONCERNS ABOUT THE R.E. LEE NAME ON THE BUILDING, THE STAGE CURTAINS AND THE PORTRAITS OF CONFEDERATE GENERALS ROBERT E. LEE AND JOHN B, GORDON IN THE AUDITORIUM. THE CITY-COUNTY GOVERNMENT COMPLEX IS HOUSED IN WHAT WAS ONCE R.E. LEE INSTITUTE, THE CITY OF THOMASTON'S HIGH SCHOOL.

ALSO ON THAT AGENDA, ISSUES WITH THE ARCHIVES, THE OLD GEORGIA FLAG IN THE BASEMENT, THE STATE CHANGED , AND SOME OTHER ARTIFACTS LINKED TO THE CONFEDERACY.

CITY MANAGER THOMPSON TOLD 101 NEWS HE HAS BRIEFED THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE UPCOMING DISCUSSIONS AND FOLLOWING THAT AUGUST 4TH COUNCIL MEETING ITS BEEN REQUESTED THAT HE PREPARE A RESOLUTION FOR THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO REVIEW ON ANY RECOMMENDATIONS BY CITY COUNCIL.
