GA DOT PROPOSES ROUNDABOUT AT 5 WAY STOP

AT  A   PUBLIC  INFORMATION  OPEN  HOUSE,  THURSDAY,  THE  GA.  DOT  3RD  DISTRICT  OFFICE OUTLINED  PROPOSED  INPROVEMENTS  TO   STATE ROUTE  74 ONE-WAY  PAIR SYSTEM IN  THOMASTON.

A  4-LEGGED  ROUNDABOUT  IS  PROPOSED  FOR  THE  FIVE-WAY  INTERSECTION OF  74/EAST  MAIN  STREET, NORTH  BETHEL  STREET, SOUTH  BETHEL  AND  STATE ROUND  36/BARNESVILLE  HIGHWAY.  AS  PART  OF  THE  ROUNDABOUT  CONSTRUCTION  EAST THOMPSON STREET  WILL  BE  REALIGNED  TO  ENTER  36 PRIOR  TO  ACCESSING  THE ROUNDABOUT.

IN  OTHER NEWS,  3RD DISTRICT  ENGINEER  THOMAS  HOWELL  IS  RETIRING  APRIL I  AND  THE  NEW  DISTRICT  ENGINEER  IS  MICHAEL  PRESLEY OF  THOMASTON.

ACCORDING  TO  ASSISTANT DISTRICT  ATTORNEY  BEN  COKER—WILLIAM  M.  KELLEY OF THOMASTON  ENTERED  THE  PLEA  BEFORE  JUDGE  MACK  CRAWFORD  IN UPSON  SUPERIOR  COURT,  FRIDAY ,    AND  KELLEY  WAS  SENTENCED  TO   20  YEARS,  10 YEARS TO SERVE IN  PRISON,  10  YEARS  ON PROBATION  AND  A  FINE OF   $20,000. THE  CASE INVOLVED  THREE  COUNTS  OF  THE   SALE OF  METH.

AS  PART  OF  THE  PLEA  BARGAIN, KELLEY  AGREES  TO  SURRENDER  $44,000   IN  ASSETS , INCLUDING   $34,000  IN  CASH  FOUND  IN  A  BANK  SAFETY  DEPOSIT  BOX,  A  PICK-UP  TRUCK AND  A  JEEP  AND  A  PISTOL.

KELLEY  ALSO  FACES  DRUG  CHARGES  IN  MERIWETHER  COUNTY  AFTER  A DRUG  BUST  AT  A  HOUSE  IN  WOODBURY.

UPSON  COUNTY  SHERIFF  DAN  KILGORE  COMMENDED  SGT.  HEATH  EPPINGER  AND  OTHER  DEPUTIES  IN  HIS  DEPARTMENT,  THE  TAYLOR  COUNTY  AND  MERIWETHER COUNTY  SHERIFF’S  DEPARTMENTS, AND  THE  THOMASTON  POLICE  DEPARTMENT  FOR  THEIR  COOPERATION  IN  THE  CASE.

KELLEY  WAS  INDICTED  ON  DRUG  CHARGES, MONDAY,  BY  THE  MARCH  UPSON COUNTY  GRAND  JURY.

NO STUDENTS INJURED IN SCHOOL BUS WRECK WED. AFTERNOON AT CENTER AND LEE

KAREN  TRUESDALE  OF  THE  THOMASTON-UPSON  SCHOOLS  TOLD  US,  THE  STUDENTS  WERE  UNLOADED, THEN  BOARDED  ANOTHER  BUS  AND  THE  ROUTE  CONTINUED.

A  MOTORIST  DRIVING  A  HONDA  AUTO,  JENNIFER  BRAZIL  WAS  INJURED  AND  TRANSPORTED  TO  THE  ER  BY  EMS.

TU SCHOOL BOARD NIXES BLOCK SCHEDULING NEXT SCHOOL TERM

AT  A  WORK  SHOP  TUESDAY, THE  THOMASTON-UPSON   BOARD  OF  EDUCATION  VOTED   4 –3  TO  DENY  A  MOVE  TO  BLOCK  SCHEDULING  AT  UPSON  LEE  HIGH SCHOOL  NEXT  SCHOOL  YEAR.

THE  BOARD   WANTS  MORE  INFORMATION  ABOUT  PLANNING  AND  WHAT  COURSES  WOULD BE OFFERED  AND  REQUESTED  AN  UPDATE  NEXT  OCTOBER  OR  NOVEMBER.

THE  HIGH  SCHOOL  DROPPED  BLOCK  SCHEDULING  ABOUT   5  YEARS  AGO, HOLDING  4 ACADEMIC  CLASSES  OF   90 MINUTES  PER  DAY   INSTEAD OF  6   PERIODS.

POLICE CHIEF DAN GREATHOUSE—NO FOUL PLAY IN THE DEATHS OF ALARKII JORDAN,AGE 37 AND ASHLEY WOODARD, AGE 43 AT 419 EAST THOMPSON STREET.

AT  A  PRESS  CONFERENCE  FRIDAY  AFTERNOON,  CHIEF  GREATHOUSE  SAID  AN  AUTOPSY  AT THE  GBI  CRIME LAB  REVEALED  THEY  DIED  OF  CARBON  MONOXIDE  POISONING,  APPARENTLY  DUE   TO  A  FIRE  IN   MS.  JORDAN’S  APARTMENT..
UPSON  COUNTY  CORONER  JAMES  GEORGE  SAID  IT  APPEARED  THEY  HAD  BEEN  DECEASED  48  HOURS  WHEN  THE  BODIES  WERE  DISCOVERED  WEDNESDAY  AFTERNOON.

TWO BODIES FOUND AT 419 EAST THOMPSON ST. WED. EVENING—A BLACK FEMALE AND A BLACK MALE, BOTH SENT TO THE GBI CRIME LAB FOR AUTOPSY.

THOMASTON  POLICE   CHIEF  DAN  GREATHOUSE  SAID  AN  INVESTIGATION  IS  ON-GOING  AFTER  HEAVY  SMOKE  DAMAGE  WAS  FOUND   IN  THE  APARTMENT.

A   $15 MILLION,  5  YEAR  SALES  AND  USE  TAX  MEASURE   FOR  EDUCATION   TO  CONTINUE  THE  CURRENT  E-SPLOST  WAS  APPROVED  WITH   84%  OF  THE  VOTE, TUESDAY. THE  VOTE  TOTAL,   980  VOTES  YES,  164  VOTES  NO.

A  SMALL  VOTER  TURNOUT,  JUST  OVER   8%,  1147  VOTES  CAST.

FAMILY  MEMBERS  REPORT  WENDALL  SUFFERED   10  FRACTURED  RIBS,  FACIAL  LACARATIONS,  AND  HIS LEFT  ARM  WAS  BROKEN  IN  TWO  PLACES.  HE  IS  IN    ICU AT GRADY HOSPITAL  IN  ATLANTA  AFTER  BEING  LIFEFLIGHTED, MONDAY  MORNING.

HE WAS  ON  THE  ROOF  REMODELING  A  HOUSE  HE OWNS  ON  ZEBULON STREET  IN  BARNESVILLE ,  WHEN  THE  LADDER  STARTED  SLIPPING, BUT  HE MANAGED  TO  RIDE  IT  TO  THE GROUND.

ACCORDING  TO  BARNESVILLE . COM,  TYSON,   FELL  20  FEET     FROM  THE  ROOF  OF  A  HOME  HE  OWNS   AND  WAS  REMODELING  AT  322  ZEBULON  STREET, MONDAY  MORNING.

HE  WAS  LIFEFLIGHTED  TO  GRADY  HOSPITAL  IN  ATLANTA . HE  WAS  CONSCIOUS AT  THE  SCENE,  BUT  REPORTS  ARE  HE  SUFFERED  A  BROKEN  ARM  AND  BACK  INJURIES.

SHERIFF KILGORE—BEWARE THE TRAVELERS

UPSON  COUNTY   SHERIFF  DAN  KILGORE  HAS  ISSUED  A  WARNING  TO  THE  PUBLIC  THAT  THE  CAROLINA  TRAVELERS  HAVE  BEEN  IN  THE  COUNTY  WORKING  THEIR  SCAMS.

A LADY  IN  EASTERN  UPSON  COUNTY  AGREED  TO  ONE  PRICE  FOR  DRIVE-WAY  PAVING, BUT  WHEN  THEY  FINISHED  THE  JOB,  THE TRAVELERS  WANTED  MUCH MORE,  $13,000.  SHE  REFUSED  TO  PAY  IT.

SHERIFF  KILGORE  SAYS  THE  TRAVELERS  USE  THREATS AND  INTIMIDATION  TO  COLLECT,  BUT  JUST  CALL  THE  LAW  ON  THEM.

RUSH MINISTRIES RETURNS BIG YOUTH EVENT TO UPSON COUNTY IN MAY

THE  UPSON  COUNTY  PLANNING  COMMISSION  GRANTED  A   SPECIAL  EXCEPTION  ON  A   3-2  VOTE  MONDAY  THAT  WILL  ALLOW  THE  EVENT  AT  THE  FORMER  HICKORY  RIDGE  GOLF  COURSE  PROPERTY  AT  THE  UPSON-PIKE  LINE.

SOME  NEIGHBORS  OBJECTED  BECAUSE  OF  TRAFFIC  AND  NOISE  CONCERNS, BUT PASTOR MARC  PRITCHETT  SAID  THE  MAY  9  EVENT  WILL    BE  A  ONE  DAY  EVENT NOT  A  FULL   WEEKEND  EVENT,  AS  IN  THE  PAST.

UP  TO  5000  YOUTH,  POSSIBLY  MORE,  ARE  EXPECTED  TO  ENJOY    MUSIC, GAMES      AND  FELLOWSHIP. LAST  YEAR  IT  WAS  HELD  AT  ATLANTA  MOTOR SPEEDWAY.

2ND BODY RECOVERED IN PIKE COUNTY LAKE

THE  BODY  BELIEVED  TO  BE  THAT  OF  THE  FATHER  OF  A  THREE  YEAR OLD  BOY  WHOSE  BODY  WAS  RECOVERED   MONDAY  WAS   FOUND   JUST  AFTER   1;30PM  TUESDAY,    AT    THE  STILLWATER  RESEVOIR   IN  WESTERN  PIKE  COUNTY.

PIKE  COUNTY  AUTHORITIES  SAY  THE  FATHER  AND  SON  WERE  FISHING  AND  THE  BOY  APPARENTLY  FELL OUT  OF THE  BOAT  AND  THE  FATHER  JUMPED  IN  TO  GET  HIM  AND  BOTH  DROWNED.

BOTH  BODIES  HAVE  BEEN  SENT  TO   THE  STATE  CRIME  LAB  FOR  AUTOPSY.  THE  NAMES  HAVE  NOT  BEEN  RELEASED  PENDING   NOTIFICATION  OF  NEXT  OF KIN.

GRIFFIN  JUDICIAL  CIRCUIT  DISTRICT  ATTORNEY  SCOTT  BALLARD  SAID  THURSDAY  HE  WILL  SEEK  AN  INDICTMENT  OF  MISDEMEANOR  RECKLESS  CONDUCT  FOR  PEACHTREE  CITY  POLICE  CHIEF  WILLIAM  MCCOLLOM.

HIS  WIFE, MARGARET  MCCOLLUM  IS  REPORTEDLY  PARALYZED  BELOW  THE  WAIST  AFTER  SHE  WAS  SHOT  IN   BED  BY  THE  CHIEF  NEW  YEAR’S  EVE.  BOTH  SAY  IT  WAS  AN  ACCIDENT.

D.A.  BALLARD  SAID   MCCOLLUM  WENT TO  BED  AROUND  9;30PM  AFTER  CONSUMING  ALCOHOL  AND  SLEEPING  MEDICATION  AND  THE   GUN  WAS  PLACED  UNDER  THE  SHEETS  AFTER  HE  GOT UP  TO CHECK  ON  BARKING  DOGS.

AT  TUESDAY’S  MEETING,  CITY  MANAGER  PATRICK  COMISKEY  TOLD  THE  MAYOR  AND COUNCIL  HE  HAS  MET   WITH GEORGE  CARRIKER  AND  PASTOR  EDDIE   JOHNSON  AND  PLANS  FURTHER  MEETINGS  WITH  INPUT  FROM  THE  PUBLIC  AND  CITY  HALL.

THE  MANAGER  SAID  HE  PLANS  TO  BRING  RECOMMENDATIONS  TO  THE  MAYOR AND COUNCIL  WITHIN  90  DAYS  ON  FORMING  SUCH A  BOARD.

GEORGE  CARRIKER  TOLD  CITY  OFFICIALS  RECENTLY,  A  CITIZEN  POLICE  REVIEW  BOARD  WILL   PREVENT  TROUBLE  SUCH  AS  THE  CURRENT INVESTIGATION  INVOLVING  COMPLAINTS  AGAINST  POLICE  OFFICER  PHILLIP  TOBIN.
