DURING A JOINT MEETING THURSDAY, THE UPSON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND THOMASTON MAYOR AND COUNCIL COULD NOT AGREE ON ALLOCATION FOR A 2011 SPLOST TO BE ON THE BALLOT IN MARCH. THE COUNTY HAS PROPOSED A 5 YEAR $15 MILLION SALES TAX MEASURE WITH THE CITY GETTING 33%. THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL ARGUED FOR A 6 YEAR $22 MILLION SPLOST WITH A 49-49 SPLIT. THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL HAS TARGETED FUNDS FOR WATER AND SEWER UPGRADES,INCLUDING OVER $5 MILLION FOR THE SEWER LINE THAT SERVES THE UPSON COUNTY JAIL COMPLEX, BUT THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HELD THEIR GROUND. AFTER THE MEETING, CHAIRMAN MAURICE RAINES APPROACHED COUNCIL ABOUT A 6 YEAR $18 MILLION SPLOST, THE SAME AS THE 2005 SPLOST. THE SPLOST HAS TO BE FINALIZED TUESDAY SO BALLOTS CAN BE PRINTED.
