UPSON COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN MAURICE RAINES DEFENDED A RECENT HIKE IN GARBAGE COLLECTION RATES AT TUESDAY’S MEETING. VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES RECENTLY INCREASED ITS RATES JUST OVER A DOLLAR, CITING THE HIGH COST OF FUEL. CHAIRMAN RAINES SAID SINCE THE COUNTY ENTERED INTO A CONTRACT WITH VEOLIA IN 09, FUEL COSTS ARE UP 58%. COMMISSIONER RUSTY BLACKSTON COMPLAINED ABOUT THE RATE HIKE AT THE LAST MEETING. HE TOLD THE BOARD TUESDAY, THE COMPANY THAT COMPETED WITH VEOLIA FOR THE CONTRACT PLEDGED NOT TO HIKE RATES.
THE COMMISSIONERS WENT INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO DISCUSS SITES FOR A NEW SPORTS COMPLEX. CHAIRMAN RAINES TOLD TGA NEWS, THREE SITES ARE BEING CONSIDERED.
