COMMISSIONER FRANK SPRAGGINS CAST THE ONLY VOTE AGAINST A TAX HIKE OF 2.26 MILLS. THE TAX HIKE WILL RAISE TAXES $90 A YEAR FOR A NON-HOMESTEAD PROPERTY OF $100,000.
STANDING ROOM ONLY AT THE MEETING AND DISGRUNTLED CITIZENS GAVE THE COMMISSIONERS AN EARFUL.
COMMISSION CHAIRMAN RUSTY BLACKSTON DEFENDED THE TAX HIKE BY NOTING THE COUNTY TAX DIGEST IS DOWN $15 MILLION. THE CITY OF THOMASTON DROPPED PLANS FOR A TWO MILL INCREASE, BUT THE CHAIRMAN SAID THE COUNTY DOES NOT HAVE REVENUE PRODUCERS LIKE THE CITY’S ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT.
EVEN WITH THE TAX INCREASE THE COMMISSIONERS WILL HAVE TO BORROW $6 MILLION AGAIN NEXT YEAR TO OPERATE.
