BIG GANG ROUNDUP IN BUTTS CO/SPALDING CO

“Operation Endless Consequences” Yields 200 Arrest Warrants for Gang, Drug, and Firearms Charges in Multi-Agency Investigation in Butts County

Butts County, GA (September 28, 2022) – Butts County Sheriff’s Office deputies and GBI agents obtained 200 arrest warrants during the execution of “Operation Endless Consequences.”  This operation is a multi-agency investigation involving gangs, drugs, and guns, plaguing the communities of Jackson and Flovilla in Butts County, GA.  Deputies and agents issued the arrest warrants for 69 defendants.  Of those arrested, sixteen are members of the Gangster Disciples.  Deputies and agents seized trafficking amounts of cocaine and marijuana and numerous firearms.  Of these firearms, some were stolen and in the possession of convicted felons.  Deputies and agents are in the process of identifying additional defendants.

The GBI joined this investigation in March 2021 after a Butts County high school basketball coach attempted to break up a fight at a basketball tournament involving rival gangs and was shot in the crossfire. A second innocent bystander was also shot.

The target of the investigation is a hybrid street gang affiliated with the Gangster Disciples.  This gang is suspected of committing numerous aggravated assaults and drive by shootings, drug trafficking, and weapons offenses.

The arrests in this case should send a clear message to gang members and their associates that their criminal activities will not be tolerated. They will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted. Restoring safety to our communities is of utmost importance.

Thank you to the agencies participating in this investigation and the arrests: Butts County Sheriff’s Office, Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County Police Department, Jackson Police Department, Georgia Department of Corrections, United States Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

GT FIRES FOOTBALL COACH AND AD

GEORGIA TECH ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP CHANGES IN ATHLETICS

(Atlanta, Georgia, September 26, 2022) Today, Georgia Tech announced leadership changes within Athletics. Todd Stansbury, athletics director, and Geoff Collins, head football coach, will both leave their roles effective immediately.

Collins, a metro Atlanta native, was named the 20th head coach in Georgia Tech football history on Dec. 7, 2018. He has had three years of recruiting success while at Georgia Tech, but the program posted a disappointing 10-28 record under his leadership.

“I am grateful to Coach Collins for his hard work and commitment to our student athletes,” said Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera. “Unfortunately, the results of our football program have fallen short of what our loyal community, fans and athletes expect and deserve. We are committed to rebuilding the program and a coaching change is a necessary first step in that process.”

Stansbury was the ninth director of Athletics when he stepped into the role in September 2016. He is an alumnus of Georgia Tech and has helped the program increase its Director’s Cup standings and achieve a school record of 90% NCAA Graduation Success Rate in the most recent data released by the NCAA during the 2021-22 academic year.

“Todd is and will always be an admired and respected member of our community. His dedication to the success of our student athletes and his love for Georgia Tech are admirable,” said Cabrera. “The challenges the athletic program has faced in recent years have grown to a point where we need to try a new approach, and that requires new leadership.”

Frank Neville, chief of staff and senior vice president of Strategic Initiatives, has been named interim director of athletics. He has served in his current role at Georgia Tech since September 2019 and is a member of the Georgia Tech Athletics Association Board of Trustees. Previously, he served 15 years in the U.S. Department of State, was vice president of Global Communication and Public Affairs at the Thunderbird School of Global Management (now part of Arizona State University) and was chief of staff and vice president of Communications and Marketing at George Mason University. He lettered in three sports (baseball, track, and football) at Carleton College, is a former competitive body-builder and martial artist, and was the baseball prospect writer at The Sporting News for 15 years.

DA MARIE BRODER REPORTS

 In a moment

As I’ve said many times, the work of the District Attorney’s Office is reactive. We enter the criminal justice system after the crime has occurred and usually after an investigation is ongoing or complete. However, for us, the shock of the moment when a crime occurs echoes throughout a case like ripples on a still pond after a concrete block is cast into it. We hear and feel it in the forensic evidence presented by crime scene investigators and medical examiners. We hear and feel it in the voices of living victims, eyewitnesses, and family members. And sometimes, we even hear it in the voice of a deceased victim who whispers to us as we try to piece together what happened to them. Yet, even then, we prosecutors only encounter the horror of these moments after the immediate sting has passed.

I, and other prosecutor’s in my office, do well to remember that processing these awful moments from the comfort of a desk or the pressure cooker of a courtroom, cannot compare to the horror of that moment when someone first learns about the terrible thing that has happened to their loved one.

My family has personally been affected by violent crime. The moment it happens, and you receive the call that something terrible has happened to someone you care about, time stops and you struggle to process what you are being told. The initial reaction is disbelief, followed by a bitter concoction of confusion, terror, and anger. All these emotions rage under a shadow of utter powerlessness. Nothing can prepare you for the awful knowledge that there is nothing you can do about what has happened, but pray for recovery, pray for justice, and pray for peace. Indeed, in these moments, all one can do is pray. The power of prayer is a shield against the most trying moments in life.

Most of you who read this article have received, or will receive, the news about the unexpected death of someone they love. No one escapes this life without these brutal, life-churning moments. To each of you touched by trauma, I am truly sorry.

I live in a world where such calls are part of a day’s work. But I don’t forget the sting of that moment. And I don’t forget the long road of grief, which never runs in a straight-line. That lies in wait for you the moment you hear that certain song, or go to that shared place, or are reminded, however slightly, of that person who is no longer here and whose voice you ache to hear just one more time.

The calling of a prosecutor places you as a regular witness to these hard moments. We can only guide these victims through the process to the best of our ability and fight for the victim who was harmed. I am proud of my team who do this each day

Police in Lovejoy are looking for an armed and dangerous man they say killed his wife

Police in Lovejoy are looking for an armed and dangerous man they say killed his wife on Friday night.

Around 7:45 p.m., police responded to Grove Way where a woman crashed into a mailbox. Officers quickly determined that Terri Livingston Jett had been shot multiple times.

They now say her husband, identified as 41-year-old Ikuko Thurman, is responsible for her shooting death.

"Attempts have been made to contact the suspect without success," police said in a statement. "A warrant has been issued for his arrest and he has been charged with murder and aggravated assault."

Police located Thurman's car about 15 miles south in Griffin at a relative's house, police said on Monday.

"That relative is cooperating according to them they have not spoken to him since Friday night, Saturday morning, so we are still looking in the Griffin and Jackson, Georgia area," Lovejoy Police Chief Michael Gaddis said.

Neighbors who live in Southfield Station in Lovejoy said they're still in shock and as long as he's on the run, they don't feel safe.

If you have any information or see him, do not approach him. You’re urged to call 911 and report it instead.
