AT A CALLED MEETING THURSDAY, THE UPSON COUNTY BOARD OF TAX ASSESSORS VOTED TO APPEAL AN ASSESSMENT BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF AUDITS THAT THE COUNTY TAX DIGEST SALES RATIO IS OUT OF COMPLAINCE, USUALLY BASED ON PROPERTY VALUES FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR. BOARD CHAIR HEATHER RUSH SAID THE NUMBERS COMPILED BY THE TAX ASSESSORS OFFICE FITS THE STATE GUIDELINES AT 38% BUT THE STATE SAYS ITS 34.7-- UPHEAVAL SHE SAID IS CAUSED BY THE RED HOT REAL ESTATE MARKET. UPSON IS NOT ALONE, 97 OF 159 COUNTIES IN GA. ARE OUT OF COMPLIANCE, TOO, INCLUDING PIKE COUNTY.
IF NOT CORRECTED THE COUNTY COULD BE SUBJECT UP TO AN $80,000 FINE BUT THE STATE GIVES COUNTIES A GRACE PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS TO GET THINGS IN ORDER. CHIEF APPRASER CHARLES MCKEEHAN SAID THE COUNTY WILL NOT BE IMPACTED THIS YEAR, BUT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM COULD BE. HE ALSO EXPECTS THE BOE TO APPEAL THE STATE'S DECISION.
STATE HOUSE MEMBER BETH CAMP TOLD 101 NEWS SHE'S LOOKING INTO THE MATTER.
