BROADBAND EXPANSION IN UPSON AND PIKE

AT WEDNESDAY'S MEETING THE PIKE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS APPROVED A MEMO OF UNDERSTANDING WITH WAV COM -- AN INDEPENDANT PHONE COMPANY IN WAVERLY HALL THAT PROVIDES FIBER OPTIC INTERNET-- THE UPSON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SIGNED A M.O.U. WITH WAV COM ON TUESDAY NIGHT. IN PIKE COUNTY CONEXON WILL PARTNER WITH SOUTHERN RIVERS ENERGY TO SERVE SOME RESIDENTS -- BUT 3770 WILL BE LEFT OUT--THOSE ARE TARGETED BY WAV COM .

ITS A $9 MILLION PROJECT OVER 24 MONTHS-- PIKE WILL SEEK A STATE GRANT OF $4.5 MILLION AND IS REQUESTED TO CONTRIBUTE $1 MILLION WITH WAV COM PUTTING UP $3.7.

UPSON COUNTY'S PROJECT IS $8.9 MILLION AND THE COUNTY WILL CONTRIBUTE $2.2 MILLION IN FEDERAL COVID RELIEF FUNDS, WAVE COM WILL PUT UP $2 MILLION AND APPLY FOR A STATE GRANT OF $4.4 MILLION TO SERVE CUSTOMERS WITH BROADBAND.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE BETH CAMP ADDRESSED THE PIKE COMMISSIONERS DURING THE MEETING AND PLEDGED TO SEEK STATE FUNDING FOR BROADBAND EXPANSION IN PIKE, UPSON, AND LAMAR COUNTIES--CALLING IT A VITAL SERVICE FOR CITIZENS.
