ARSON, SUICIDE HIGH FALLS STATE PARK

THE MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SUSPECTS ARSON TUESDAY EVENING AT THE BACKWOODS BAR AND GRILL NEAR HIGH FALLS STATE PARK—AND THE MAIN OWNER GARY LAWRENCE ALLEGEDLY COMMITTED SUICIDE AFTER DRIVING TO MACON.

AT 6;20PM MONROE COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE BUSINESS AT 5047 HIGH FALLS ROAD AND FOUND IT ENGULFED WITH HEAVY SMOKE AND FIRE.

LAWRENCE WAS SEEN LEAVING THE BUSINESS SHORTLY BEFORE THE CALL WAS MADE TO 911. THE S.O. SAID HE DROVE TO HIS SISTER'S HOUSE, SWAPPED OUT VEHICLES THEN DROVE TO HIS EX-WIFE'S HOUSE IN MACON AND REPORTEDLY TOOK HIS LIFE.

BACKWOODS BAR AND GRILL IS CO-OWNED BY AMANDA SMALLWOOD.
