THE THOMASTON-UPSON COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION MEETS MONDAY , JULY 25, 2;30PM AT THE UPSON SENIOR CENTER REGARDING A MARIETTA COMPANY'S REZONING REQUEST FOR AN UPSCALE APARTMENT COMPLEX ON VETERANS DRIVE NEXT TO WEST VALLEY APARTMENTS--A PROJECT THAT HAS DRAWN HEAVY OPPOSITION FROM SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS.
WHEN EVER A REZONING REQUEST IS FILED THAT IS WITHIN 300 FEET OF THE COUNTY, THE JOINT PLANNING COMMISSION IS REQUIRED TO HEAR THE ISSUE.
THE COMPANY WAS ON THE AGENDA AT THE JUNE MEETING OF THE THOMASTON ZONING COMMISSION BUT IT WAS POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST BECAUSE IT DID NOT COMPLY WITH THE NEW ZONING ORDIANCE REQUIREMENTS ON NOTIFICATION OF NEAR-BY PROPERTY OWNERS.
A BIG CITIZEN TURNOUT AT THAT MEETING WAS OPPOSED TO THE DEVELOPMENT CITING TRAFFIC AND OTHER ISSUES IT COULD BRING INTO SINGLE FAMILY NEIGHBORHOODS.
THOSE CITIZENS HAVE POSTED YARD SIGNS AND DISTRIBUTED FLYERS URGING THE PUBLIC TO CONTACT THE THOMASTON CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE DOWN THE APARTMENTS.
THE THOMASTON ZONING COMMISSION WILL MEET IN AUGUST TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL ON THE REZONING REQUEST THEN IT WILL GOES TO CITY COUNCIL FOR A DECISION LATER IN AUGUST.
