GRIFFIN FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH COULD LEARN AT THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF UNITED METHODISTS IN NOVEMBER IF IT CAN DISAFFILIATE FROM THE CONFERENCE. BY A 5 VOTE MARGIN THE MEMBERSHIP VOTED TO DISAFFILIATE WITH 440 MEMBERS VOTING, TUESDAY.
THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD AT THE ATHENS CIVIC CENTER NOVEMBER 18TH AND GRIFFIN FIRST WILL HAVE 3 VOTING DELEGATES. AN 80 YEAR MEMBER OF THE CHURCH, RAY BARRON TOLD 101 NEWS, IF THE VOTE GOES IN THE CHURCHES FAVOR IT WILL OWE IN EXCESS OF $300,000 TO THE CONFERENCE TO COVER THE RETIRED PASTORS PENSIONS BUT SHOULD RETAIN THEIR $17 MILLION CAMPUS CURRENTLY DEEDED TO THE CONFERENCE.
CLEAR OF CONFERENCE OBLIGATIONS, GRIFFIN FIRST UNITED METHODIST COULD BECOME AN INDEPENDANT CHURCH OR MANY CONSERVATIVE CONGREGATIONS HAVE JOINED THE GLOBAL METHODIST CHURCHES.
