NEW APARTMENTS APPROVED IN GRIFFIN

A ONCE-TABLED ANNEXATION AND REZONING OF 30 ACRES ON WILLIAMSON ROAD FOR GRIFFIN VILLAGE AN APARTMENT COMPLEX FOR INCOMES OF $35,000 PLUS WAS APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY BY THE CITY OF GRIFFIN BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, TUESDAY.

DEVELOPER HARVEY PILKENTON HAD REVISED THE SITE PLAN FOR THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT -- SINCE IT WAS TABLED TO OFFER MORE BUFFER TO THE OAK GROVE ROAD AREA AND THE NEW PLAN WAS RECOMMENDED BY PLANNING AND ZONING STAFF.

DURING A PUBLIC HEARING, FORMER MAYOR DICK MORROW SPOKE IN FAVOR OF THE 150 UNIT APARTMENT COMPLEX , DENYING IT WILL BE SECTION 8 HOUSING . NEAR-BY HOMEOWNERS OBJECTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT CITING TRAFFIC ISSUES THAT ALREADY EXIST IN THAT SECTION OF WILLIAMSON ROAD AND ITS POTENTIAL TO LOWER PROPERTY VALUES.

THE COMPLEX WILL BE FUNDED BY LOW-INCOME TAX CREDITS AND A COMMERCIAL LOAN PARTNERING WITH AN ATLANTA HOUSING FIRM.
