PIKE CO. CLASS OF 1969 TO BE HONORED

PIKE COUNTY GOT A BIG WRITE-UP IN THE SUNDAY AJC ABOUT A GRADUATION CEREMONY SET FOR SATURDAY AT 10AM AT THE PIKE COUNTY AUDITORIUM FOR THE CLASS OF 1969 AT PIKE COUNTY COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL—THE SCHOOL FOR MINORITY STUDENTS AT THE TIME. STUDENTS WHO NEVER RECEIVED A DIPLOMA.

THE AJC SAID THE STUDENTS WERE DENIED DIPLOMAS BECAUSE THEY TOOK TO THE STREETS AND PROTESTED THE WAY THE COMMUNITY WAS HANDLING DESEGREGATION.

ACCORDING TO AJC POLITICAL WRITER JIM GALLOWAY—AS PUNISHMENT THE CLASS OF 1969 WAS BARRED FROM GRADUATION AND NEVER RECEIVED DIPLOMAS.

THE PIKE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION PASSED A RESOLUTION LAST YEAR AUTHORIZING DIPLOMAS FOR THE STUDENTS --31 STILL LIVING 13 DECEASED.
