ACCORDING TO HIS GRANDSON, CHAD MADDOX, HIS GRANDFATHER, 86 YEAR OLD JOSEPH HAMMONDS WAS TRANSPORTED TO A MACON HOSPITAL BY UPSON EMS. FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY TOLD TGA NEWS, MR. HAMMONDS RECEIVED HIP AND SHOULDER INJURIES, CUTS AND BRUISES. THE S.O. SAID MOST OF THE FIRE DAMAGE WAS CONFINED TO THE GARAGE AND STORAGE AREA AND MR. HAMMONDS 2000 BUICK WAS DAMAGED BY THE FIRE. MR. HAMMONDS IS THE GRANDFATHER OF STATE REPRESENTATIVE BILLY MADDOX.

AT TUESDAY’S MEETING, THE THOMASTON UPSON BOARD OF EDUCATION ACTED ON A RECOMMENDATION OF SUPERINTENDANT DR. MAGGIE SHOOK, AND APPROVED DR. LASHARON MCCLAIN AS THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF UPSON-LEE SOUTH ELEMENTARY. DR. MCCLAIN HAS SERVED AS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT SOUTH SALEM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEWTON COUNTY FROM 2008 UNTIL THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.

GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL HAS ANNOUNCED CATERPILLAR WILL CREATE 200 JOBS IN GRIFFIN. THE LEADING ENGINE MANUFACTURER WILL INVEST $120 IN THE CATERPILLAR GRIFFIN ENGINE CENTER. THE INVESTMENT WILL MAKE IT A MAJOR ENGINE CENTER WITH UPGRADES IN MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT, AND THE EXISTING FACILITY.

THE 2ND MOTORIST HENRY HERRING OF DANIEL ROAD, AND HIS WIFE SANDRA WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE E.R. BY UPSON EMS. THE GSP REPORT SAID DANIEL WAS NORTHBOUND AND RAN THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND T-BONED HERRING WHO WAS TURNING INTO 19 FROM HARP ROAD.

UPSON COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN MAURICE RAINES DEFENDED A RECENT HIKE IN GARBAGE COLLECTION RATES AT TUESDAY’S MEETING. VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES RECENTLY INCREASED ITS RATES JUST OVER A DOLLAR, CITING THE HIGH COST OF FUEL. CHAIRMAN RAINES SAID SINCE THE COUNTY ENTERED INTO A CONTRACT WITH VEOLIA IN 09, FUEL COSTS ARE UP 58%. COMMISSIONER RUSTY BLACKSTON COMPLAINED ABOUT THE RATE HIKE AT THE LAST MEETING. HE TOLD THE BOARD TUESDAY, THE COMPANY THAT COMPETED WITH VEOLIA FOR THE CONTRACT PLEDGED NOT TO HIKE RATES.

CHARTER PROPOSES TO MOVE OFFICE
CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS WANTS TO BUY THE NEW LIFE CHURCH PROPERTY ON WOODLAND ROAD AND MOVE THE CABLE TV OFFICE TO THAT SITE. AT MONDAY’S MEETING OF THE UPSON PLANNING COMMISSION, THE BOARD VOTED TO REZONE THE PROPERTY O-I. THE JOINT CITY-COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION HAD VOTED FOR THE PROPOSAL LAST WEEK. THE JOINT BOARD HAD INPUT BECAUSE THE PROPERTY IS WITHIN 300 FEET OF THE CITY LIMITS. CHARTER’S AGENT GARY SELF SAID THERE IS LIMITED PARKING AT THE CURRENT OFFICE ON SOUTH CENTER STREET, THE COMPANY ALREADY OWNS THE PROPERTY THAT SURROUNDS NEW LIFE CHURCH, AND TECH PERSONNEL ARE ALREADY BASED AT THE TOWER. THE COMPANY APPLIED FOR C-2 ZONING BUT PLANNING COMMISSION DIRECTOR CHAD JACOBS WOULD NOT AGREE TO IT, CALLING IT SPOT ZONING. HE FOUND OFFICE ZONING AS A WORKABLE SOLUTION. A 34 YEAR OLD UPSON COUNTY MAN WAS LIFE FLIGHTED TO THE MEDICAL CENTER IN MACON AFTER HE APPARENTLY SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FOREHEAD WITH A 22 RIFLE. UPSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT ANSWERED A CALL TO 104 ROSE CREEK ROAD AND UPSON EMS WAS ALSO DISPATCHED. EMT’S STABLIZED THE MAN AND THEN HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE AIRPORT WHERE THE COPTER LANDED. THE S.O. REPORT SAID THE MAN’S WIFE WAS TALKING TO HIM ABOUT LEAVING AND HE GOT UPSET, GOT THE RIFLE FROM A CABINET AND SHOT HIMSELF.

SERTOMA SERVICE TO MANKIND AWARD
THE RETIRED PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF BANK OF UPSON, ROBERT CRAVEY WAS GIVEN THE THOMASTON SERTOMA CLUB SERVICE TO MANKIND AWARD, THURSDAY. MR. CRAVEY WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND SO THE AWARD WAS ACCEPTED BY FAMILY MEMBERS. HE HELPED FORM BANK OF UPSON IN 1951 AND BECAME PRESIDENT IN 1954. HE WAS PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SERVED ON THE SCHOOL BOARD AND ON VIRTUALLY EVERY COMMITTEE AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. MR. CRAVEY’S PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN ON A BOMBING MISSION IN ITALY IN 1945 AND THE UNDERGROUND HID HIM FROM THE ENEMY UNTIL THE WAR ENDED.

SUICIDE STAND-OFF CALMED
THE PAST WEEK HAS BEEN TRAGIC FOR UPSON COUNTY WITH A MURDER-SUICIDE, AND A 2ND SUICIDE, BUT AN UPSON COUNTY DEPUTY STOPPED ANOTHER POSSIBLE SUICIDE SUNDAY NIGHT. ADAM LEE TANNER, 29 OF ARROWHEAD LAKE ROAD WAS THREATENING SUICIDE BUT HAD INDICATED HE WANTED A DEPUTY TO PULL THE TRIGGER IN A SHOOT-OUT. DEPUTY KODY KENNEDY GOT TANNER ON THE PHONE ONCE HE WAS LOCATED AT ARROWHEAD LAKE, AND CONVINCED HIM TO SURRENDER AND TURN OVER HIS 9 MILLI METER PISTOL. TANNER’S WIFE SAID HER HUSBAND HAD BEEN DRINKING AND EARLIER IN THE DAY HAD A DISAGREEMENT WITH A RESIDENT AT POTEMKIN VILLAGE ON KNIGHT TRAIL. TANNER RETURNED LATER AND FIRED A SHOT FROM HIS PICKUP, DURING A BIRTHDAY PARTY. THOMASTON POLICE AND UPSON S.O. RESPONDED AND LOCATED TANNER AT THE LAKE. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR RECKLESS CONDUCT.
