SPEAKER AND LT. GOV COMING TO UPSON CO.

AT  TUESDAY’S  MEETING, UPSON  COUNTY  COMMISSION  CHAIRMAN MAURICE  RAINES ANNOUNCED  THAT  GA.  HOUSE  SPEAKER  DAVID  RALSTON  AND LT.  GOV. CASEY  CAGLE WILL  BE  AT  THE  ROCK  RANCH,  THURSDAY  EVENING  OCT.  4.

THEY  WILL  RECOGNIZE  RETIRING  STATE  SENATOR  GEORGE  HOOKS AND   RETIRING   HOUSE MEMBER BILLY  MADDOX  AND HOUSE  MEMBER  ROBERT DICKEY  WHO  HAS  BEEN  PLACED  IN  A  NEW  DISTRICT  AND  WILL  NO  LONGER  REPRESENT UPSON  COUNTY.

LAMAR  COUNTY  S.O.  SAID  A  LONE  GUNMAN  WEARING  A  MASK,  DISPLAYED  A  SINGLE-BARREL  SHOTGUN  TO  THE  FEMALE CLERK   AT   T.J.  OUTFITTERS  STORE   ,  DEMANDED  MONEY  AND  FLED.

 

HE  WAS  DRESSED  IN  ALL  BLACK  CLOTHING,  ACCORDING  TO  MAJOR  BRAD  WHITE. THE  ROBBERY  HAPPENED  BETWEEN  9;30  AND   10PM.

FIRE VICTIM AIRFLIGHTED TO AUGUSTA BURN CENTER.

UPSON  S.O.  WAS   TOLD  RICHARD  GUY  WAS   BURNED  WHILE  TRYING  TO  LIGHT  A KEROSENE  LATERN  AT  THE  OLD  CREST  CHURCH  OF  THE  NAZARENE  BUILDING, AT  329  CREST  LANE,  SUNDAY,  A  BUILDING  BEING  USED  AS  A  RESIDENCE.    

35 YEAR  OLD  JUSTIN  LUCKEY  TOLD  DEPUTIES, HE  AND   HIS  GIRL  FRIEND  WERE  COOKING  RIBS  IN THE  KITCHEN  OF  THE  DINING  HALL   AND  GREASE  ON  THE  STOVE  CAUGHT  FIRE  AND  SPREAD  QUICKLY. THE BUILDING  WAS  A  TOTAL  LOSS. 

ACCORDING  TO  THE  REPORT ,  A  DEPUTY  WARNED  THOSE  RESPONDING  TO  BE  CAUTIOUS  THERE  COULD  BE  A  METH  LAB  OPERATING  AT  THE  SITE. THE  NARCOTICS  TASK  FORCE  RESPONDED  AND  IS  INVOLVED  IN  THE  INVESTIGATION.

SUSPECTED CASE T.B. ULHS

  ACCORDING  TO  A  PRESS  RELEASE,  THOMASTON-UPSON  SCHOOL  SYSTEM  AND  UPSON  COUNTY  HEALTH  DEPARTMENT  WILL OFFER  FREE  TUBERCULOSIS  TESTING  ON  WED.,  SEPT. 19, FOR  STUDENTS AND  STAFF  AT  THE  SCHOOL.

 

STUDENTS MUST  HAVE  CONSENT  FORMS  SIGNED  BY  PARENTS  OR  GUARDIANS IN  ORDER  TO  RECEIVE THE  SIMPLE  TB  SKIN  TEST. HEALTH  DEPART.  OFFICIALS  WILL  RETURN FRIDAY, SEPT.  21ST WITH  THE  RESULTS  AND  IF  A  STUDENT  TESTS  POSITIVE, THE  PARENT  OR   GUARDIAN  WILL  BE  CONTACTED   WITH  INSTRUCTIONS  FOR  FURTHER  TESTING  BY  THE  UPSON  COUNTY  HEALTH  DEPARTMENT.

 

SCHOOL  OFFICIALS  FOUND  OUT  ABOUT  THE  SUSPECTED  CASE  LATE  FRIDAY  AFTERNOON  AND  MET   WITH  DISTRICT  4  PUBLIC  HEALTH  OFFICIALS  TO  DEVISE  A  PLAN  OF  ACTION THAT  WOULD  ASSURE  THE HEALTH  AND  WELL  BEING  OF  EVERYONE INVOLVED,  ACCORDING   TO  SCHOOL  SYSTEM  SPOKESPERSON, KAREN  TRUESDALE.  THE  PRESS  RELEASE  SAYS TB  CAN  BE  TREATED  AND  CURED, IF  IDENTIFIED.

UPSON CO. COM. CONFIRM HOOD LEAVING

DURING A  MONDAY  PRESS  CONFERENCE,  CHAIRMAN  MAURICE  RAINES SAID  THE  BOARD  OF  COMMISSIONERS  HAVE  ACCEPTED  THE  RESIGNATION  OF  COUNTY  MANAGER  KYLE  HOOD  EFFECTIVE  SEPT.  28TH.  HOOD   HAS  BEEN  HIRED  AS  TOWN  MANAGER  OF  TYRONE, GA.  IN  FAYETTE  COUNTY.

 

THE  COMMISSIONERS  SAID  PAM  FUENTES  WILL  BE  APPOINTED  INTERIM  COUNTY  CLERK,  AND  THE BOARD  WILL  MOVE   EXPEDITIOUSLY  TO  HIRE  A  NEW  COUNTY  MANAGER.  CHAIRMAN  RAINES  SAID  IT  WILL  NOT  AFFECT  THE  DAY  TO  DAY  OPERATION  OF  COUNTY  GOVERNMENT.  HE  TOLD  TGA  NEWS,  COUNTY  MANAGER  HOOD  AND   THE  FINANCE  OFFICER  ALREADY  HAVE  THE  BUDGET  PROCESS   UNDERWAY   AND  ARE  AWAITING  INFORMATION  FROM  ALL  DEPARTMENT  HEADS,  SO  IT  CAN  MOVE FOWARD.

SHERIFF WENDELL  BEAM  SAID  A  10  YEAR  VETERAN  OF  SPALDING  COUNTY  SHERIFF’S  OFFICE,  THOMAS  BLAKE  CUSTER, 31,  WAS  ARRESTED  BY  THE  GBI, THURSDAY FOR  FORGERY IN  THE  FIRST  DEGREE.   HE  WAS  RELEASED  ON  $5703  BOND.

UPSON COUNTY MANAGER KYLE HOOD LEAVING FOR POSITION IN TYRONE, GA.

THE  FAYETTE  COUNTY  NEWSPAPER  IS  REPORTING  HOOD,  28,  WILL  FILL  THE   VACANT  TOWN  MANAGER   POST  SOMETIME  IN  OCTOBER.  HOOD  HAS  BEEN  COUNTY  MANAGER  OF  UPSON  COUNTY  FOR  FOUR  YEARS.

THE  TOWN  MANAGER  POST  IN  TYRONE  HAS  BEEN  VACANT  SINCE  THE  PREVIOUS  TOWN  MANAGER  RICHARD  NEWBERN  WAS  TERMINATED  LAST  NOVEMBER. HOOD  WAS  CHOSEN  OVER  TWO  OTHER  FINALISTS.

 

TYRONE  MAYOR  ERIC  DIAL  SAID  HOOD   HAS  BEEN  A  CANDIDATE  FOR  SOME  TIME  AND  WAS  CHOSEN  FROM  AMONG  DOZENS  OF  APPLICANTS.

 

UPSON  COUNTY  COMMISSION  CHAIRMAN  MAURICE  RAINES  IS  EXPECTED  TO  ADDRESS HOOD’S  DEPARTURE  AT  A  PRESS  CONFERENCE  MONDAY  AT  1PM.

PHONE SERVICE RESTORED NORTHSIDE THOMASTON SHORTLY AFTER 5;30PM THURSDAY.

UPSON  911  DIRECTOR  CARL  MCKINNEY  TOLD   TGA  NEWS  ALL  AGENCIES WORKED  WELL  TOGETHER  AND  THERE  WERE  NO  PROBLEMS  DURING  THE  DOWN  TIME.

WINDSTREAM—PHONE SERVICE NORTHSIDE THOMASTON WILL BE DOWN FOR FOUR HOURS UNTIL 4PM OR SO.

SOMEONE  CUT  A  FIBER  OPTIC  CABLE  DURING  CONSTRUCTION  WORK—BUT  UPSON  COUNTY  911  IS  WORKING.  MAJOR  DAN  KILGORE  SAID UPSON   SHERIFF’S  DEPARTMENT     HAS  RE-ROUTED  911  CALLS  THROUGH  THE  PIKE  COUNTY  SHERIFF’S  DEPARTMENT, BUT  ALL  OTHER  LINES  AT  THE  UPSON  S.O.  ARE   DOWN.

2012 TAX DIGEST APPROVED

 

Upson  County  Tax  Commissioner  Berry  Cook told TGA  News,the 2012 tax  digest  has  been  approved by  the  Ga.  Depart. of  Revenue.  Tax  bills  will  be in  the  mail  shortly  with  a   due  date  of  Nov. 15. Due  to  a rollback  of  almost  6  mills, by the  Upson  Co. Commissioners,    most  property  owners  will  see  a  reduction in   taxes,  he  said.
